Bai Hu Tang (White Tiger Decoction)

- Shi Gao is acrid, sweet, and extremely cold. Clears interior heat and drains fire from Yang Ming Jing stage. Use high dosage.
- Zhi Mu helps Shi Gao to clear heat and generate fluids.
- Zhi Gan Cao and Jing mi tonify Qi, harmonize the middle jiao, benefit the St, generate fluids, and prevent the extreme cold ingredients from injuring the middle jiao.
Function: Clears heat and generates fluids
Indications: Yangming Jing syndrome in Shan Han disease, or Qi level vigorous heat in warm febrile disease.
Symptoms: High fever with profuse sweating and aversion to heat, severe thirst, irritability, and red face.
Pulse: Flooding, big and forceful, or slippery and rapid
Clinical Applications:
- Typical symptoms are 4 BIGS (high fever, profuse sweating, severe thirst, and flooding pulse). In reality, if patient has rapid and forceful pulse, high fever, profuse sweating, irritability and thirst, this formula is also useful.
- For cases with constipation, unconsciousness and delirium, add Da Huang and Mang Xiao.
- For cases with vigorous heat in both Qi and Blood stages, the patient has high fever, irritability, thirst, unconsciousness, delirium, and convulsion. Add Ling Yang Jiao, Shui Niu Jiao.
- For Xiao Ke syndrome (diabetes) du to St heat, add Tian Hua Fen, Lu Gen and Mai Men Dong.
- Currently used for infectious disease such as pneumonia, encephalitis, gingivitis etc. due to vigorous heat in Yangming Qi stage.
Cautions and Contraindications:
- Fever without sweating and no thirst, exterior syndrome that is not completely released.
- Cases with superficial and thready pulse.
- Fever due to blood deficiency, flooding and weak pulse.
- Vigorous Yin excluding the deficient Yang syndrome causes true cold with false heat.
