Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Construct the Qi Decoction)
- Drain Cold Downward

- Hou Po
- Da Huang is bitter and cold. Vigorously purges heat from the LI.
- Mang Xiao is salty and cold. Helps Da Huang to purge heat downward, moistens the LI, softens masses and stool.
- Zhi Shi Breaks Qi blockage for fullness, distention and pain.
- Hou Po strongly moves Qi downward.
Function: Vigorously purges heat accumulation downward from LI
Indications: Severe pattern of Yangming Fu organ excess diseases
Symptoms: Heat accumulation and hard stools in the intestines causing constipation with frequent flatus, epigastric and abdominal oppression and fullness, abdominal pain which increases with pressure, tense and firm abdomen with palpation. In severe cases, there may also be unconsciousness, delirium, and excess-tidal fevers, constant sweating from extremities, maybe diarrhea that is watery and green.
Tongue: Red tongue, yellow/black, dry, and rough coating with prickles and cracks
Pulse: Deep, Slippery, and Forceful
Clinical Applications:
- This formula is used for Yangming Fu organ disease characterized by distention, fullness, dryness, and excess syndrome.
- The key symptoms are constipation, distention and fullness of epigastrium and abdomen, yellow dry and thick, or charred and black rough coating with prickles and cracks, deep and rapid pulse.
- For cases with Qi deficiency, add Ren Shen
- For Yin and fluids deficiency, add Xuan Shen, Sheng Di Huang
- Currently used for acute simple intestinal obstruction, adhesive intestinal obstruction, ascaris intestinal obstruction, acute cholecystitis, and acute pancreatitis, etc..
Cautions and Contraindications: It should not be used without modification for treating very weak patient. Contraindicated during pregnancy.
