- Huo Xiang expels wind cold from exterior, aromatically transforms dampness in the MJ, raises the clear Qi and descends turbid pathogen to treat Huo Luan (sudden turmoil disorder, similar to cholera)
- Ban Xia and Chen Pi dry dampness and harmonize the St, descend rebellious Qi to stop vomiting.
- Zi Su Ye and Bai Zhu help Huo Xiang to expel wind cold, aromatically transform turbid dampness.
- Bai Zhu and Fu Ling strengthen the transporting function of the Spleen, drain dampness, harmonize the MJ, and stop diarrhea.
- Hou Po and Da Fu Pi promote Qi movement, transform dampness, and eliminate fullness in the abdomen.
- Jie Geng facilitates the Lung Qi, benefits the diaphragm, assists the release of the exterior, and transforms dampness.
- Sheng Jiang, Da Zao, and Zhi Gan Cao harmonize the MJ and the functions of the other herbs.
Function: Releases the exterior, transforms dampness, regulates Qi, harmonizes the MJ.
Diagnosis: Exterior wind cold with interior dampness stagnation.
Indications: Sudden turmoil disorder such as vomiting and diarrhea, chills and fever, headache, full and stifling sensation in the chest and diaphragm, pain in the epigastrium and abdomen.
Tongue: White and greasy coating.
Pulse: Moderate
Clinical Applications:
- This formula is commonly used for treating vomiting and diarrhea due to cold damp injury leading to disharmony of Sp and St (especially in the summer), always add Pei Lan to strengthen the action of aromatically transforming dampness.
- The key symptoms are vomiting and diarrhea, chills and fever, white and greasy tongue coating.
- In this formula, the action of transforming dampness and harmonizing the MJ is stronger than releasing wind cold. For cases of severe exterior syndrome marked by fever and chills without sweating, add Xiang Ru and cover with a blanket after drinking herbal tea to induce diaphoresis.
- For severe pain in the epigastrium and abdomen due to Qi stagnation, add Mu Xiang, Xiang Fu.
- For cases with food stagnation, omit Zhi Gan Cao and Da Zao, replace with Shen Qu and Shan Zha.
- For cases with severe dampness marked by a thick and greasy coating, omit Bai Zhu, replace with Cang Zhu.
- Currently used in treating acute gastroenteritis, common cold causing dyspepsia and stomach flu du to MJ injury by wind cold damp in the Summer and Autumn.
Cautions and Contraindications: Contraindicated in sudden turmoil disorder due to damp heat.
