- Qiang Huo and Fang Feng dispels wind and eliminates dampness. Qiang Huo is characteristically treated for wind cold damp Bi syndrome in the upper body.
- Mi Zhi Huang Qi and Zhi Gan Cao augment Qi to promote Qi and Blood circulation. Gan Cao relieves spasms to stop pain.
- Dang Gui and Chi Shao harmonize the Ying Qi and invigorate Blood.
- Jiang Huang warms the channels, disperses cold, expels wind, dries dampness, moves Qi (stagnation), and relieves pain, especially for treating stiffness and pain of the neck, shoulder, and arms.
- Sheng Jiang assists to expel wind and dampness.
Function: Augments Qi, harmonizes Ying, expels wind, and overcomes dampness.
Diagnosis: Wind cold damp Bi syndrome with Ying Qi and Wei Qi deficiency.
Indications: Stiffness, pain, numbness in the shoulders, neck, and upper back with limited movement.
Tongue: White coating
Pulse: Moderate
Clinical Applications:
- This formula is commonly used for shoulder and arm pain due to Ying-Wei deficiency with wind cold damp evil obstruction. Usually add Gui Zhi, Wei Ling Xian, and Si Gua Luo.
- For painful obstruction of lower extremities, ad Du Zhong, Niu Xi, and Xu Duan.
- For cases due more to damp, add Cang Zhu, Fang Ji, and Y:i Yi Ren.
- For cases due more to cold marked by severe cold pain in the joints, add Fu Zi.
