- Huang Lian is bitter and cold, drains fire, clears heat accumulation from the stomach.
- Sheng Di Huang cools the blood and nourishes Yin.
- Mu Dan Pi cools blood and clears heat.
- Dang Gui nourishes blood and removes blood stagnation.

Function: Clears Stomach heat and cools the blood
Indications: Heat accumulation in the stomach
Symptoms: Tootheache especially extends and radiates into the head, cheek fever, painful teeth that are averse to heat and favor cold, gum ulceration, gum bleeding. Lips, tongue, cheek sweeping and pain, bad breath, dry mouth.
Tongue: Red color with yellow coating
Pulse: Thready, rapid
Clinical Applications:
- This formula is commonly used for toothache due to St heat with fire accumulation.
- The key symptoms are toothache extending and radiating into the head, bad breath, and red tongue with yellow coating, slippery and rapid pulse.
- For constipation due to intestinal dryness, add Da Huang.
- For cases with thirst and a desire to drink cold beverages, add Shi Gao.
- For gum bleeding due to blazing St heat, add Niu Xi.
- Currently used for Stomatitis, periodontal, trigeminal neuralgia, glossitis, and idiopathic halitosis due to St fire attacking upward.
Cautions and Contraindications: Contraindicated in cases with toothache due to wind-cold, or tooth and gum problems due to Kd deficiency.
