Si Ni Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction)

- Sheng Fu Zi rescues the devastated Yang.
- Gan Jiang warms the MJ and eliminates cold.
- Zhi Gan Cao Tonifies the Qi, moderates spasmodic abdominal pain, and reduces the toxicity of Sheng Fu Zi.
Function: Rescues the Devastated Yang, warms the MJ, and stops diarrhea.
Indications:
- Severe Kd Yang deficiency including Sp and Ht Yang deficiency with cold invading and sinking into Shaoyin stage.
- Yang collapse syndrome due to faulty excessive diaphoresis in Taiyang stage.
Symptoms: Extremely cold extremities, aversion to cold, sleeping with knees drawn up, vague consciousness, lethargic, vomiting, lack of thirst, abdominal pain and cold, diarrhea with undigested food particles.
Tongue: Pale with white, slippery coating
Pulse: Deep, thready and faint
Clinical Applications:
- This formula is currently used for rescuing devastated Yang. The key symptoms are extremely cold extremities, feint consciousness, lethargic, constant desire to sleep, pale tongue with slippery white coating, and faint pulse. Formula can also be used for tonifying simple Kd Yang deficiency in non-emergency situations.
- This is a first aid formula currently used for state of shock due to Yang collapse that is occurring from acute myocardial infarction, cardiac insufficiency, vomiting and diarrhea from acute and chronic gastroenteritis, etc.. Also used for hypopituitarism, hypothyroidism, and adrenal insufficiency due to extreme Kd Yang deficiency.
Cautions and Contraindications: Contraindicated in cases with true heat - false cold syndrome characterized by cold extremities with strong body fever, thirst with desire to drink cool beverages, red tongue with yellow coating and a forceful pulse.
