- Ban Xia dries dampness, transforms phlegm, descends rebellious Qi, and harmonizes the St.
- Zhu Ru clears GB heat, harmonizes the St, stops vomiting, and relieves irritability.
- Zhi Shi and Chen Pi regulate the Qi circulation and transform phlegm.
- Fu Ling strengthens the Sp, drains dampness to eliminate the source of phlegm.
- Zhi Gan Cao augments Sp Qi, harmonizes the MJ and formula.
- Sheng jiang and Da Zao harmonize the MJ and relieve the toxicity of Ban Xia.
Function: Regulates Qi, transforms phlegm, clears GB heat, and harmonizes the St.
Indications: Disharmony between GB and St, and phlegm heat accumulation.
Symptoms: Irritability, insomnia, excessive dreams, dizziness, vertigo, nausea, vomiting, palpitations, anxiety, nervousness, easily frightened, bitter taste in the mouth, oppression of the chest. There may also be epilepsy with copious sputum.
Tongue: Yellow and greasy coating
Pulse: Slippery, wiry, may be rapid
Clinical Applications:
- All the various indications of this formula are due to phlegm heat.
- The key symptoms are yellow, greasy tongue coating with wiry, slippery, maybe rapid pulse.
- For severe phlegm heat, add Huang Lian.
- For cases with thirst, omit Ban Xia, replace with Mai Men Dong and Tian Hua Fen.
- For epilepsy, add Dan Nan Xing, and Gou Teng.
- Currently used for neurosis, gastritis, chronic bronchitis, morning sickness, and Meniere's syndrome due to disharmony between GB and St with phlegm heat accumulation.
