- Wu Zhu Yu is pungent and hot. Enters the Lv, Kd, Sp, St. Warms the St, stops vomiting, warms the Lv, descends rebellious Qi downward, warms the Kd, stops vomiting and diarrhea.
- Sheng Jiang assists Wu Zhu Yu in warming the St and dispersing cold. Descends rebellious Qi to stop vomiting. Use in high dosage (18g).
- Ren Shen and Da Zao strengthen the St, tonify Qi, moderate and harmonize the MJ.
Function: Warms and tonifies the Lv and St, directs rebellious Qi downward, and stops vomiting.
Indications:
- Deficient cold in the St marked by vomiting immediately after eating, stifling sensation and fullness in the chest and diaphragm, or stomach ache with acid regurgitation and Cao Za (indeterminate gnawing hunger).
- Lv and St deficient cold marked by Jueyin headache, retching, or spitting cleat fluids.
- Sp, Lv, and Kd deficient cold marked by vomiting and diarrhea, cold hands and feet, irritability as if patient wants to die.
Tongue: Pale, thin white and slippery coating
Pulse: Thready and slow, or thready and wiry, not rapid
Clinical Applications:
- This formula is used for Yangming, Jueyin, and Shaoyin channel disorders that are all characterized by vomiting du to MJ deficient cold leading to turbid Yin rebelling upward.
- The key symptoms are vomiting or dry heaves, spitting of clear fluids, cold hands and feet, no thirst, pale tongue with slippery coating, thready slow, or thready wiry pulse.
- For severe vomiting, add Ban Xia and Sha Ren.
- Currently used for chronic gastritis, neorogenic headache, migraine, trigeminal neuralgia, morning sickness, and Meniere's disease due to Lv and St deficient cold.
Cautions and Contraindications: Cases with vomiting and acid regurgitation due to heat, and headache due to Lv Yang rising.
