- Bai He and Mai Men Dong nourish Yin moisten the Lu, clear heat, and stop coughing.
- Sheng Di Huang, Shu Di Huang, and Xuan Shen nourish Kd Yin and clear deficient heat.
- Dang Gui nourishes the blood and moistens dryness.
- Bai Shao nourishes the Yin and Blood.
- Jie Geng and Chuan Bei Mu clear Lu heat and transform phlegm.
- Gan Cao harmonizes actions of other herbs and combined with Jie Geng can soothe the throat.
Function: Nourishes Yin, moistens Lu transforms phlegm, and stops cough.
Diagnosis: Internal dryness due to Lu and Kd Yin deficiency.
Indications: Chronic coughing with blood streaked sputum, dry and sore throat, feverish sensation of palms and soles, steaming bone and night sweats.
Tongue: Red tongue with little coating.
Pulse: Thready and rapid.
Clinical Applications:
- This Formula is often used for Lu and Kd Yin deficiency with deficient fire rising, leading to coughing with blood streaked phlegm. The key symptoms are coughing, dry and sore throat, red tongue with little coating, thready rapid pulse.
- For cases with profuse and yellow sputum, add Dan Nan Xing, Huang Qin, and Gua Lou Pi.
- For severe cough and wheezing, add Xing Ren, Wu Wei Zi, and Kuan Dong Hua.
- For severe coughing of blood, omit Jie Geng, replace with Bai Ji, Bai Mao Gen, and Xian He Cao.
- Currently used for Lu TB with coughing of blood, chronic pharyngitis, bronchitis, and laryngitis due to Lu and Kd Yin deficiency.
Cautions and Contraindications: Contraindicated in cases of Sp Yang deficiency with loose stool and abdominal distention, cough due to wind cold or damp phlegm.
