- Sang Ye and Ju Hua are both king herbs, expel wind and clear away heat from the exterior and Lung to stop cough.
- Bo He helps Sang Ye and Ju Hua disperse wind-heat from upper jiao by inducing sweating.
- Jie Geng opens the Lung Qi, transforms phlegm, benefits the throat.
- Xing Ren assists the king herbs by facilitating the flow of Lung Qi. helps inhalation and coughing. Descends Lung Qi.
- Lian Qiao descends toxic heat.
- Lu Gen clears Lung Heat and generates fluids to stop thirst.
- Gan Cao clears heat and harmonizes the formula.
Function: Releases exterior wind-heat, stops coughing by facilitating flow of Lung Qi.
Indications: Early stage of wind-warm febrile disease.
Symptoms: Coughing with slight fever and slight thirst.
Tongue: thin, white coating
Pulse: Superficial and Rapid
Clinical Applications:
- This formula is referred to as the "mild, pungent, and cool formula" in Dr. Wu Ju Tong's book "Wen Bing Tiao Bian." Used for early stage warm-febrile disease and other wind heat exterior disorders in which coughing is the dominant symptom.
- It is also used for eye disorders due to wind-heat, and a hacking cough due to dryness.
- For cases with wheezing due to pathogenic heat attacking the Qi level of Wen Bing, add Shi Gao and Zhi Mu
- For severe coughing due to Lung Heat, add Huang Qin.
- For severe thirst, add Tian Hua Fen
- For coughing of blood, add Bai Mao Gen, Ou Jie, and Mu Dan Pi.
- For coughing with yellow and sticky sputum, difficult expectoration, add Gua Lou Pi and Zhe Bei Mu.
- Currently used for upper respiratory tract infection, flu, acute bronchitis, and acute conjunctivitis.
