- Bie Jia enters Yin region to nourish Yin, reduce fever, and goes into collaterals to search for evil pathogen.
- Qing Hao is aromatic. Clears and vents heat from collateral, guides evil pathogens out to the Yang region. Wen Bing Tiao Bian said: "Qing Hao is unable to enter the Yin region directly and is guided by Bie jia; Bie Jia is unable to come to the Yang region by itself, it is guided by Qing Hao. The clever point is entering first and coming out later."
- Sheng Di Huang nourishes Yin and cools the Blood.
- Zhi Mu nourishes Yin and subdues fire.
- Mu Dan Pi drains smoldering fire from the Yin region, and recovers Yin by reducing fire.
Function: Nourishes Yin and vents heat.
Indications: Heat smoldering in the Yin region of the body occurs during the later stage of warm febrile disease.
Symptoms: Night fever that reduces in the morning with the absence of sweating as the fever recedes.
Tongue: Red tongue with little coating
Pulse: Thready and rapid
Clinical Applications:
- This formula was originally used for deficient heat syndrome due to remaining heat with Yin and fluid deficiency during later stage of febrile disease.
- Currently used for fever with Yin Deficiency syndrome occurring in chronic fevers of unknown cause, chronic pyelonephritis, or renal TB, etc..
Cautions and Contraindications: Contraindicated in cases with spasms or convulsions.
