- Mai Men Dong nourishes the Lu and St Yin, clears deficient fire. Originally this was used as 70g.
- Ban Xia descends rebellious Lu and St Qi downward, and transforms phlegm (9g). When it is used with a large dosage of Mai Men Dong, its dry nature is reduced. It also enables Mai Men Dong to keep a tonic action and lose its greasy nature.
- Ren Shen tonifies the MJ Qi and produces body fluids.
- Jing Mi, Da Zao, and Gan Cao tonify Sp and St Yin, directs rebellious Qi downward, and regulates MJ.
Diagnosis:
- Lu Yin Deficiency with rebellious St Qi rising (Lu atrophy disorder). Indications: coughing and spitting of saliva, wheezing, shortness of breath, dry mouth and throat, feverish sensation of palms and soles.
- Stomach Yin deficiency with rebellious St Qi rising. Indications: Vomiting, thirst, and dry throat.
Tongue: Red, dry tongue with little coating.
Pulse: Deficient and rapid.
Clinical Applications:
- This is the main formula used for Lung atrophy disorder.
- The key symptoms are coughing, spitting saliva, SOB, wheezing, red, dry tongue with little coating, and deficient, rapid pulse.
- For cases with severe Yin deficiency, add Bei Sha Shen and Yu Zhu.
- For cases with tidal fever, add Di Gu Pi and Yin Chai Hu.
- Currently used for chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, chronic pharyngitis, laryngitis and Lu TB due to Lu Yin deficiency. Also used for peptic ulcer, chronic atrophic gastritis due to St Yin deficiency.
Cautions and Contraindications: Cases of dampness or Lu atrophy due to deficient cold.
