- Jin Yin Hua is sweet, cold, enters the Lu, St, and LI
- Lian Qiao is bitter, slightly pungent, and cool. Enters the Ht, Lu, and GB
- Bo He and Niu Bang Zi are both pungent and cool, expel wind-heat, soothe the throat, detoxify and clear the head and eyes
- Jing Jie and Dan Dou Chi are both pungent and slightly warm. They release the exterior by inducing sweating and expelling wind
- Jie Geng facilitates the Lung Qi, benefits throat and transforms phlegm
- Gan Cao clears heat and detoxifies. It is paired with Jie Geng to treat sore throat and stop coughing
- Lu Gen clears heat and generates fluids
Function: Disperses exterior wind-heat, clears interior heat, and relieves toxicity
Indications: Early stage of warm febrile diseases due to toxic heat invasion. Any kind of Wen Bing in early stage
Symptoms: Severe fever with mild chills, headache, thirst, cough, and sore throat
Tongue: Red tip with thin white or thin yellow coating
Pulse: Superficial and rapid
Clinical Applications:
- This formula is reffered to as the "medium pungent and cool formula" in Dr. Wu Ju Tong's book "Wen Bing Tiao Bian." Has been used for early stage of warm-febrile disease.
- The key symptoms are obvious fever with mild chills, sore throat, thirst, and superficial, rapid pulse. Compared to Sang Ju Yin, this formula is stronger for releasing the exterior and reducing high fever. Sang Ju Yin is more focused on the Lung and is more effective for stopping cough.
- For cases with severe thirst, add Tian Hua Fen.
- For severe sore throat, add Ma Bo, and Xuan Shen
- For nosebleed, omit Jing Jie and Dan Dou Chi, replace with Bai Mao Gen, Ce Bai Tan, and Zhi Zi Tan.
- For prominent dry cough, add Xing Ren.
- For stifling sensation in the chest, add Huo Xiang and Yu Jin.
- Currently used for flu, acute tonsillitis, measles, epidemic parotitis, acute endometritis, and early stage encephalitis or meningitis due to wei stage wind heat.
Cautions and Contraindications: Ineffective for damp heat unless modified.
