- Ban Xia dries dampness, transforms phlegm, descends rebellious Qi, harmonizes stomach, and stops vomiting.
- Ju Hong regulates Qi movement, dries dampness, and eliminates phlegm.
- Fu Ling strengthens Sp and leaches out dampness.
- Zhi Gan Cao harmonizes the formula, softens the Lu, and harmonizes the MJ.
- Sheng Jiang descends rebellious Qi, transforms phlegm, and neutralizes toxic nature of Ban Xia.
Function: Dries dampness, transforms phlegm, regulates Qi, and harmonizes MJ.
Indications: Damp-phlegm accumulation in MJ and/or Lung causing cough
Symptoms: Coughing with profuse whitish sputum, easily expectorated, distention and stifling sensation in the chest and diaphragm, nausea, vomiting, weary extremities, there may also be dizziness and palpitations.
Tongue: White and moist coating
Pulse: Slippery
Clinical Applications:
- This is the most basic formula that is widely used for various disorders due to damp phlegm.
- The key symptoms are coughing with profuse whitish sputum that is easily expectorated, white, greasy or moist tongue coating, moderate or slippery pulse.
- For wind phlegm, add Tian Nan Xing and Zhu Li.
- For heat phlegm, add Huang Qin and Dan Nan Xing.
- For cold phlegm, add Gan Jiang and Xin Xin.
- For phlegm food stagnation, add Lai Fu Zi and Shen Qu.
- For phlegm Qi obstruction, add Zhi Shi and Hou Po.
- Currently used for chronic bronchitis, emphysema, chronic gastritis, morning sickness, and nervous vomiting due to damp phlegm or damp Qi obstruction.
Cautions and Contraindications: This formula is pungent and dry, so should not be used for cough with Yin deficiency and bloody phlegm.
